By Stan Bush

EDGEWATER, Colo. (CBS4) - A wild shootout ensued after police officers intentionally crashed a car in a residential neighborhood to protect a child victim of sex abuse.

Edgewater police chief John Mackey says his agency was notified of late Monday night that the child's attacker was stalking her at a protective house. Police were called to the undisclosed location, but did not find the suspect.

"We had officers come here last night because she was frightened. She notified our dispatch center," Mackey said.

An alert was sent to police agencies in Jefferson County. Golden police spotted the suspect driving a white Jeep Cherokee Tuesday afternoon and chased him back to Edgewater. Officers decided to use a "pit maneuver" on the suspect vehicle when he got too close to the victim.

The suspect immediately opened fire on the officer.

"The officers stopped the white Jeep by ramming the white Jeep with their police vehicles. The suspect in the case immediately came up firing rounds through both the windshield and out the exterior side door of his vehicle," Mackey said. "The Golden officers then returned fire and the suspect was shot.

Edgewater police saw the suspect, whose name has not been released, fire multiple times but did not hit a target. Police reportedly only fired once. The suspect was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He is cooperating with investigators.
