Don't Forget About Teens When Donating Toys This Holiday Season

DENVER (CBS4) - This holiday season CBS4 is teaming up with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver for the annual Care 4 Colorado Toy Drive, and one Mother of the Year is grateful for the help during the holidays.

Shaunte is a single mother of two teenage boys, and she's also Mother of the Year at the Bronco's Boys and Girls Club.

"Honestly they're like a second family, and they've been there for me for so many different things," Shaunte said.

One thing she gets help with is Christmas.

"I try to budget it in as best i can," she said.

Making sure her boys feel holiday joy isn't always easy.

"They just want electronics, they want music, they want things that aren't necessarily cheap," Shaunte said. "I can't afford them all the time, but I do my best."

Jayden, 13, is grateful for the gifts that are given at the club.

"Because some of the kids ... their parents don't have enough money to get them any toys," he said.

But Jayden says sometimes teens get missed in the mix.

"Because they are all kiddy toys, and I give them to my cousins," he said.

Like any parent, Shaunte struggles when she sees her kids go without. So she's glad for any help she can get from the club.

"It helps them see that … even though mom couldn't get them everything they want, they were able to get a few items," Shaunte said.

CBS4 is collecting toys so that every child at the clubs has a happy Christmas. The Care 4 Colorado Toy Drive is underway at all Front Range King Soopers stores. Drop off a toy donation in the bin at the front of the store.
