Bear Determined To Be Too Comfortable Around Humans

By Suzanne McCarroll

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4)- A bear endearing herself to a neighborhood in Arvada had to be euthanized as authorities say she was getting too comfortable around humans.

Authorities also say the animal wasn't the only bear in the neighborhood and they are urging people to bring in their bird feeders which can attract bears.

Jack McGrane is a landscaper in Arvada. He went swimming in a local lake there this week.

"I took a swim in the lake, looked out west and there was a big bear taking a dip by himself.
It looked like a friendly bear but I didn't want to get too close," said McGrane.

Susie Humphrey-Johnson was at home this week when a sheriff's deputy knocked on her door.

"He said folks stay calm there's a brown bear in your back yard," said Humphrey-Johnson.

She watched it wander around, head to a neighbor's yard and then eventually stroll down the block.

The bear made several stops in the neighborhood.

Lisa Hamilton heard about the bear, "We know he was sleeping in a yard, we were given notification that he was sleeping over here on Fig Court."

A few blocks away, Sara Coder had a hummingbird feeder hanging outside her front door.

"I have one right there and that seems a little close to home to have a bear come visit," said Coder.

She took it down and will let the hummingbirds fend for themselves.

Authorities observed the bear for 24 hours and decided to euthanize the animal.
