Protective Vest On The Way For Another K-9 Officer In Douglas County

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – A law enforcement K-9 will soon be safer thanks to a charitable donation.

Douglas County Sheriff's K-9 officer Colt will soon get a bullet- and stab-protective vest. It was provided by the nonprofit organization Vested Interest

Several dogs on the force already have such vests. Each one costs between $1,700 and $2,200, and K-9 handler Deputy Todd Tucker told CBS4 he's excited for the newest one.

"People don't think of the K-9s as a police officer. The handlers do. He's my partner. They're the ones ultimately who are sent into harm's way along with the officers often without protection," Tucker said.

Colt will get his new vest in a couple of months.
