Boys & Girls Club Kids Excited About Christmas, Giving

DENVER (CBS4) - Tae'relle is a dedicated Boys and Girls Club member, she's at the Cope Club pretty much every day. She stays there until 7 or 8 p.m. when her mom gets off work.

The 10-year-old is president of Torch Club, which is a community service and leadership group, and she's currently working on an application for Youth of the Year for the 10 to 11-year-old age group.

"I want them to know that I'm not just a member, I'm a leader in my community," she told CBS4.

She says the clubs get crazy at Christmas time, with parties and extra service projects.

"Everyone is trying to find a job to clean up, or find something to do just to get some club bucks," Tae'relle explained.

Club bucks are the currency at the Boys & Girls Clubs, members can earn them for doing odd jobs and then use them to buy toys at the holidays. Tae'relle has 65 club bucks right now. She's looking forward to spending them at the holiday party, but she's adamant that the gifts she buys will go to her family members.

"Me, I'm a Christian, so I don't have to celebrate Christmas just by getting presents. We say a big prayer over our dinner, and it's more about celebrating God," she said.

Tae'relle told CBS4 that she thinks Christmas is more fun when you're celebrating people other than yourself, and she's excited to spend her hard earned club bucks.

CBS4's Care 4 Colorado Toy Drive provides the toys those kids buy with their club bucks. You can help put a smile on a child's face by donating a toy at participating King Soopers stores, at CBS4 studios at 10th and Lincoln, or at the iHeart Radio studios in the Tech Center. We'll be collecting toys through Christmas Eve.
