Marczyks Fine Foods Closed After SUV Crashes Into Store

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver police have placed a man in custody after his SUV slammed into Marczyks Fine Food Market on East Colfax Tuesday afternoon.

"He hit it with explosive force. There is glass literally all over the store," store owner Pete Marczyk told CBS4's Tom Mustin.

Tuesday afternoon around 12:30 the driver lost control and crashed into the front of the store. Parts of eastbound Colfax Avenue were shut down while crews cleaned up the mess.

Surveillance video showed two employees talking to a customer as the truck careened into the market. The explosive impact completely covered one woman in glass. Amazingly she walked away. No customers or employees were hurt.

"We had a full store. We had customers in the store. We had our full staff in the store," said Marczyk. "We had our wine shop manager sitting at her desk, the truck's front bumper ended up where the desk is now. She got out of the way. She sustained some minor scratches but beyond that, thankfully everybody is okay."

The GMC Yukon knocked down part of a wall just inches from several customers. Police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Witnesses say the man was belligerent towards officers before being taken away.

"I can't even imagine how bad it could have been if we had had a family where we keep our carts and the kids come and grab the cart... I can't even imagine," said Marczyk.

And as crews scooped up heaps of glass and produce after a bizarre accident, Marcyzk put things in perspective, "Nobody was hurt, so really that is all that matters. Just extraordinarily thankful nobody was hurt."

Marczyk says the store is expected to reopen by Thursday. The suspect driver's name has not been released.
