Rapids Fans Go Crazy For Coach Mastroeni's Stache

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - Fans showed up with all kinds of fake mustaches on Saturday for the home opener of the Colorado Rapids.

The mustaches were of course meant to imitate the fancy one Coach Pablo Mastroeni grew during the offseason.

Mastroeni told CBS4's Vic Lombardi this week he waxes the mustache to give it that curling-up-on-the-sides look.

He said he was inspired to grow the mustache when his father "told him he has to change his mentality from a player to a coach."

"His advice to me was 'Son, facial hair is the quickest way to start seeing yourself differently in the mirror every day.' "

Judging by the Rapids' Twitter page, there were plenty of tributes to Mastroeni at Dick's Sporting Good Park on Saturday afternoon in Commerce City.

The Rapids wound up playing to a scoreless tie against New York City Football Club. The team announced that a record sellout crowd showed up for the match.
