Wildfire Near Waldo Canyon Prompts Evacuations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A wildfire that broke out Saturday near Waldo Canyon has forced evacuations.

The fire was reported shortly before noon and is said to be at 600 acres and growing.

KKTV in Colorado Springs has reported that Cedar Heights in the Manitou Springs area is currently under a mandatory evacuation as well as Waldo Canyon and 30th Street from Gateway to Chuckwagon in Colorado Springs.

Cave of the Winds is under a pre-evacuation order.

Approximately 1050 homes have been evacuated.

"No structures have burned, we're taking precautionary measures right now for those who may come in harms way. There's nothing that's of immediate concern right now," Lt. Jeff Kramer with the El Paso County Sheriff's Department said.

Seventy firefighters are battling the fire.

The Norris Penrose Equestrian Center is now available for large animals within the evacuation area to be taken. Access to the center is off of 8th Street. Evacuation centers have been set up at Woodland Park and Cheyenne Mountain high schools.

Garden of the Gods park has also been closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
