Williams Amaya, Committed After Double Killing, Seeks Supervised Trips
EAGLE, Colo. (AP) -- A western Colorado man who was committed to a mental hospital after fatally shooting his aunt and uncle is asking a judge to let him take supervised trips in the Pueblo area. Williams Amaya was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2014 deaths of 40-year-old Mayra Lope and 42-year-old Eliseo Lopez in El Jebel.
Amaya is confined to the Colorado Mental Health Institute's 300 acres.
The Aspen Times reports psychiatrists at the hospital say the supervised trips off hospital grounds would be part of Amaya's rehabilitation.
They say he's remorseful after bathing bullets in holy water and shooting his aunt and uncle, whom he believed were possessed by Lucifer. He was 35 at the time.
District Court Judge Paul Dunkelman says he will issue a written ruling on the request.
