CDOT Unveils New Tool To Help Take Care Of Wintry Roads

DENVER (CBS4) - The Colorado Department of Transportation has some new tools to help take care of the roads this winter.

A new type of snowplow called a tow plow can clear off two lanes of traffic at the same time.

CDOT showed off their 13 tow plows on Wednesday. They'll be deployed throughout the state in upcoming weeks, and more are on the way.

The tow plows will allow road crews to open up roads in wintry conditions sooner, and CDOT will require fewer plow operators to get the job done.

"To us, doing our job safely and effectively means getting moms and dads to and from work safely, children home from school, friends to community events and goods that we all depend on delivered safely to their destination," said CDOT spokesman Ryan Rice.

CDOT also has 142 traditional plows ready to clear roads in the Denver metro area and another 90 that focus on the Interstate 70 mountain corridor.

If you are driving near a snowplow, CDOT officials want to remind you not to attempt to pass it for safety reasons. The safest place to be for a vehicle driver in that situation is a good distance behind the plow.

CDOT will be getting 10 more tow plows next year.
