Bernie, Trump Jr. Hope To Entice Young Colorado Voters

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- Surrogate candidates took to the campaign trail in Colorado on Monday, hoping to steer young voters in the direction of their candidates.

Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke to crowds at both the University of Colorado Boulder campus and Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He was greeted as if he was still running for president.

But his message was to get voters to support his former rival and current Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Sanders pointed to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's record of not paying his taxes to make a point.

"Our tax system is corrupt. It is grossly unfair. And yet in one day, Mr. Trump did more to make my point than I did in a year-and-a-half. Thank you, Donald Trump," said Sanders.

He campaigned for Amendment 69 which would make health care universal for everyone in Colorado. Clinton has not taken a position on that state ballot issue.

"The insurance companies and the special interests, they are far more concerned about the profits of their corporations than they are about the needs of the people of Colorado," said Sanders.

Donald Trump Jr. also made an appearance in Boulder in support of his father. He tried to refocus supporters after a week of negative publicity.

"They would rather talk about foul language and potty mouths than Hillary Clinton using the State Department as a platform to sell out Americans," said Trump Jr.

Trump Jr. planned a campaign stop at a popular restaurant in Boulder, The Sink, but didn't tell the venue about the visit beforehand. He had to move the appearance at the last minute but was still met by protesters.

Trump Jr. said the negative images and outlandish behaviors at pro-Trump rallies are all part of a liberal conspiracy.

"They are planting people at Trump rallies to make it look like they are Trump supporters doing all these negative things when you have a firebombing of a Republican GOP office in North Carolina. This quote, unquote "tolerance" that they preach isn't so tolerant. It's only tolerant if you agree with everything that they say," said Trump Jr.
