JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)– Scientists from the Colorado-based United Launch Alliance and Lockheed Martin will go after an asteroid.

The rocket built in Colorado will take off from Cape Canaveral. Scientists designed the spacecraft to vacuum up handfuls of gravel from an asteroid’s surface and then deliver the space dirt back to Earth.

The mission will take seven years. The launch is scheduled for Thursday night.
