Rocky Mountain Showdown 'Sets Tone' For CU, CSU's Seasons

By Michael Spencer

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - Monday was the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown edition of Xfinity Monday Live. Host Michael Spencer sat down with former Colorado Buff Tyler Polumbus and former Colorado State Ram Joel Dreessen to talk about Friday's rivalry game.

"This game is important to everyone," said Polumbus.

Polumbus played for Colorado from 2003-2007.

"I remember when we won it, and I got that trophy and I was holding it up. It wasn't a bowl game, and it wasn't a championship, but it felt good."

"For us to go out there and win that ballgame, it always set the tone for our season," said Dreessen, who played at CSU from 2001-2004.

The Rocky Mountain Showdown, which dates back to 1893, will be played Friday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The Buffs won last year's game thanks to some great special teams play.

Colorado blocked a field goal in overtime and then secured the win thanks to a 32-yard field goal from Diego Gonzalez.

CU dominates the overall record, having won 63 of the 87 meetings, but the teams have rotated wins since the 2011 season with CU winning in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and CSU winning in 2012 and 2014.
