Woman Walks Away From Crash, Killed By Hit & Run Driver

By Melissa Garcia

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that began when a woman drove her car off of Interstate 76 in Brighton.

Police said the 50-year-old woman, who was behind the wheel of a blue Subaru, was travelling eastbound on I-76 near 136th Avenue early Friday morning when she hit a metal pole and crashed into a culvert.

After crashing, the woman apparently got out of her car and began walking along the interstate, said John Bradley, a spokesman for the Brighton Police Department.

"We didn't have any original report of an accident this morning. We just had the reports at 4:26 a.m. and 4:54 a.m. of a female walking along the roadway. We sent officers out twice and they were unable to locate her. So that's the only reason we believe she might have been walking along the roadway after an accident," said Bradley.

Another driver heading westbound on I-76 later saw a body lying on the side of the road about a half-mile away from the crash and called 911 to report it.
Officers did a grid search, walking along the road and the grass to search for evidence.

Investigators believed that the woman was struck by a car sometime between 5 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. Now they are searching for clues as to who hit and killed her and didn't stop.

"If somebody did strike her along the roadway, we'd like to talk to them and find out what happened, and obviously we'd like to know who they are," said Bradley.
Authorities asked that anyone with information call the Brighton Police Department.

Police had not released the woman's identity.
