Person Of Interest Sought After Thumbtacks Found On Popular Biking Route

By Andrea Flores

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Thumbtacks sprayed the southbound lane of Deer Creek Canyon Road earlier this month. Now the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man they believe may be responsible.

"We got several calls about cyclists getting flat tires on Deer Creek Canyon Road," said Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Jenny Fulton. "When we responded, there were lots of thumbtacks thrown all over the road."

But a clue led them to the suspect.

"We found packaging for thumbtacks on the road and we were able to track that back to King Soopers as being one of the only locations that sells that type of thumbtack," said Fulton.

The night before surveillance footage captured the person of interest at the King Soopers near Simms Street and Ken Caryl Avenue.

By morning, hundreds of thumbtacks lined Deer Creek Canyon Road.

"I know that a lot of the drivers in the area aren't really that nice to cyclists, compared to other places in the metro area," said Cyclist Zach Elzi. "I was still surprised; I didn't think anyone would go to that extreme."

Elzi rides the route once a week and says the incident could've been much worse.

"I feel like he really put people, drivers and cyclists alike, in danger by doing that," Elzi said.
