Grazing Goats Provide Wildfire Mitigation For Metro Neighborhood
CASTLE PINES, Colo. (CBS4) - One homeowner's association in Castle Pines has decided to use the eating power of goats as a long term solution to fire mitigation.
Three hundred goats have been deployed in the Pine Ridge neighborhood, released into the weeds and grass Saturday afternoon to eat their hearts out in pursuit of reducing the risk of wildfire.
For the second year in a row, the goats are working to clear a 22-acre area by eating through it.
Fire danger is very real for this neighborhood.
"We were all evacuated in 2005 for the Cherokee Ranch fire. That's when we started getting serious about doing things to protect not only our land but our homes," said Barb Saenger of the Pine Ridge HOA.
In the past, the HOA used heavy equipment to get rid of fire fuel. Residents say the goats are a more sustainable, long term solution.
