Man Shot By Officers In Boulder Dies

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - A man shot by police after they say he was shooting into Boulder Creek has died. The man has been identified as Bryson Fischer of Erie.

The incident happened on Sunday near the bridge over Broadway in the city's Central Park.

Emergency calls first came in at 2:15 p.m. about a man with a gun under the bridge shooting into the water. Two officers who responded to the scene said Fischer, 28, pointed a gun at them.

Both officers then fired a shot or shots at Fischer, who was taken to Boulder Community Health where he later died.

Another man who appeared to be with Fischer ran away before officers could talk to him. Boulder Police spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said investigators don't yet know whether that man is a second suspect in the case or another witness. Either way, officers want to talk with him.

So far it's not clear why Fischer might have been firing a gun into the water. Police haven't said what type of gun he was firing or how many shots he fired into the water before he was shot.

One witness who lives in Broomfield and was visiting Boulder told CBS4 the reaction to the situation was frantic.

"Everybody just went to the floor trying to (get) cover. Some were behind the trees. It was the closest I've been to something like this," Teresita Villasenor said.

Ted Bachrach, who works near the park, said police presence after the shooting was significant.

"It's obviously a huge concern," Bachrach said. "There was a tremendous police presence almost instantaneously, so I think that's all you can hope for as a citizen."

Cordingly says both officers who fired at Fischer have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into what happened. The department plans to release the names of those two officers Tuesday.
