Traffic Stop Ends In Officer-Involved Shooting

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - One person was seriously injured after an officer-involved shooting Sunday night. It's the fourth officer-involved shooting in Aurora this month.

About 11 p.m. Sunday, Aurora police officers conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation on a Saturn sedan at East Evans Avenue and South Blackhawk Street.

The car was occupied by four people and during the traffic stop one passenger got out of the vehicle and ran away from police. Officers gave chase, and the suspect at some point produced a handgun.

One officer fired his/her weapon which struck the adult male suspect. A handgun was recovered from the scene after the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No others were injured in the incident, and the three other occupants of the vehicle were detained.

The officer involved will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, as is protocol.

This is the fifth officer-involved shooting of the Aurora Police Department since December. A spokesperson for the department said officers are shaken.

"We have had three in the past approximately two weeks now. Those parties were also armed, or at least armed with a replica that looked just like a firearm. I think officers are always on high alert, nationwide we're on high alert. We just came off of police week where we're honoring fallen officers and things like that so that's in the forefront of our mind, safety, going home at night, and using good tactics and being safe," said Crystal McCoy of the Aurora Police Department.
