$900 Million Powerball Jackpot Is Record-Setting, Drawing Saturday Night

DENVER (CBS4)- The Powerball jackpot jumped to $900 million on Saturday, hours before the drawing for the record jackpot. The previous record was $564.1 million.

The Powerball prize lump-sum cash payment is worth an estimated $558 million.

There have been two Powerball jackpot winners in Colorado since the state joined the multi-state Powerball game in 2001. The state's largest Powerball jackpot winner, Claude G. from Rifle, claimed $90 million in August 2014.

According to the Colorado Lottery, Powerball drawings work like this: the game starts with a jackpot of $40 million and players may win other prizes ranging from $4 to $2 million. To play, consumers choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. To win the jackpot, a ticket must match all six numbers. Tickets are $2 and players can also opt to spend an extra $1 for the Power Play, which gives them the chance to multiply lower-tier prizes.

Proceeds from the Colorado Lottery games benefit the outdoors across the state including parks, wildlife areas, trails and open space. Over the past 33 years, the lottery has returned more than $2.8 billion to outdoor projects through Great Outdoors Colorado, the Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
