History Colorado Reveals Shirt From Young Crockett

By Alan Gionet

DENVER (CBS4)- History Colorado Center will bring out a rarely seen item for exhibition Monday. It's a shirt worn by young Davy Crockett.

Davy Crockett, who lived from 1786–1836 was known as "King of the wild frontier." Crockett fought in the battle of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution. He later served in the U.S. House of Representatives from his native Tennessee, where he opposed President Andrew Jackson's forced relocation of American Indians. It led to his losing his Congressional seat.

He is said to have worn the shirt when he was about 13 years old. He ran away from home at about that time and spent three years roaming from town to town.

"What we know about Davy Crockett is that around the age of 13 he actually begins his travels where he begins his skills as a tradesman, as a trapper and so we're fortunate to have this in Colorado because descendants of Davy Crockett actually live in Colorado," said Alisa Zahller, Senior Curator for Artifacts at History Colorado.

The shirt will go on display at History Colorado at Broadway and 13th when it opens at 10 a.m. Monday. It's part of "Who Knew!? Everything Old is New Again." The exhibit has experts taking rarely seen items out of storage and revealing them anew each week.
