Early Season Avalanches Strike Summit County, 1 Skier Injured
SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The ski season has just begun, but already the threat of avalanches is underway. There were three slides in Summit County over the weekend, one of which buried a backcountry skier near Breckenridge.
The Summit County Rescue Group responded to multiple avalanches over the weekend, and had to rescue a skier from a large slide on Saturday. The skier had triggered an avalanche and was partially buried on the east ridge of Bald Mountain. He was able to call for help late Saturday afternoon.
The skier suffered multiple injuries and was evacuated by a Flight For Life helicopter, which was able to land in the remote backcountry despite the high winds.
The other weekend avalanches were located in the 2nd Steep Gully just West of Arapahoe Basin ski area, and at the top of Loveland Pass. There were no injuries in either.
SCRG reminds backcountry users that avalanches can happen at any time of the year, and to check the Colorado Avalanche Information Center for current avalanche conditions before heading to the backcountry.
