Report: Helicopter Pilot Failed Power Lines Inspection

SILT, Colo. (CBS4) - Federal investigators say the pilot who was flying a helicopter before it crashed near Silt last year failed in his checklist planning to inspect power lines before taking off.

The crash killed the pilot, Doug Sheffer, and his two passengers Larry Sheffer and Christopher Gaskill in January 2014.

Investigators say the helicopter hooked a line strung to protect power lines just before it went down.

The report also states that Sheffer likely did not see a power line that he struck because he had been flying directly towards the sun.
