Veteran Police Dog Who Survived Injuries In Iraq Passes Away

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - The Colorado Springs Police Department announced "with a heavy heart" that retired Canine Rudy had passed away on Saturday. Rudy was a Belgium Malinois who had been in law enforcement since 2010.

Prior to working with CSPD, the dog worked with the 10th Special Forces Group. He had completed three tours in Iraq and survived being wounded by an IED in Baghdad in 2007.

Rudy was assigned to Officer Juhl in 2010 and completed the 440-hour basic Canine Patrol Academy.

He worked with the K-9 Unit until retiring in December 2014. The police department said, "He went to live with Officer Juhl, where he enjoyed his retirement playing ball and receiving Milk-bones."

Rudy was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, and succumbed to the illness July 25.
