First Human Case Of West Nile In Colorado Confirmed

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities have confirmed the year's first human case of the West Nile virus in Colorado.

A man in Mesa County has been diagnosed with the virus. No other details were released.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has also found infected mosquitoes in Denver and Larimer counties.

In 2014, 118 people in Colorado contracted West Nile virus and four died.

"Although we can't predict how much West Nile virus activity will occur this summer, we know the virus is present, and that means people are at risk," Jennifer House, state public health veterinarian said in a statement.

Health experts say the best defense against West Nile is using a good mosquito repellent.
