Carjacking That Led To Wild Chase In Aurora Doesn't Appear To Be Random

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Aurora have a man in custody after a wild chase Monday morning that involved a carjacking that doesn't appear to be random.

The chase started at about 10:30 a.m. near 16th Avenue and Moline Street. Officers were after a man in a gray Chevy Trailblazer SUV that was carjacked at knifepoint Sunday morning in Aurora.

The owner of the SUV, who wasn't injured in the carjacking, told CBS4 the vehicle's GPS system helped officers locate the Trailblazer.

The chase was high speed at times and at one point a woman jumped out of the vehicle. There were aslo reports of the SUV being on East Colfax Avenue at times possibly going the wrong way.

Police admit they lost the SUV for a little while but the GPS brought them to an apartment complex at 16th and Lansing Street. Police said the suspect, identified as Roderick Tennison, was in the apartment complex but officers were able to locate him and take him into custody.

The owner of the SUV told CBS4 he was approached by Tennison Sunday morning. Tennison claimed to have been put in jail for shoplifting by the SUV's owner. After approaching the victim with a sharp object, Tennison allegedly stole the SUV and fled.

Investigators scoured the SUV but didn't find anything missing. In fact they found food that Tennison had once again allegedly shoplifted from a grocery store, and the SUV's owner was allowed to keep it.

CBS4 looked up Tennison and found a nine-page rap sheet with multiple charges of driving under the influence, being a habitual traffic offender and shoplifting. He also has two active felony warrants for and aggravated traffic offense and drug possession.
