Thieves Target Nonprofit That Recycles Bikes For Children

DENVER (CBS4) - A Denver bike recyclery that specializes in getting kids to ride, is asking the public for help in the search for a thief.

"It's pulling some of the resources out of what we would have to help serve the kids," said Lucky Bikes Shop Manager Tom Hall.

Someone broke into the Trips for Kids' Lucky Bikes Recyclery located at 3150 West Jewell Avenue Tuesday night and stole two bikes and money. One of the bikes was handmade out of bamboo, worth $3,500.

The nonprofit and volunteer organization which refurbishes old bikes and helps children get out and ride is also facing incurred costs for a broken window.

Teenagers who can't afford to buy their own bicycle can work at Lucky Bikes, sweeping floors, cleaning up and learning how to build bikes for themselves.

Reyes Juarez is one of those teens, "I don't like to be just staying at home doing nothing. I'd rather be productive."

Juarez has volunteered at the shop for over a year and the bike he's been working on is supposed to be his when he's done.

"You're taking your own responsibility in your own hands," said Juarez.

Susette Bilderas purchased bicycles for her entire family at Lucky Bikes because it was the only place she could find that was able to meet her price needs. She's disappointed burglars chose the store as their target.

"I'm sure if they had spoken to the owner I'm sure they would have figured something out," said Bilderas.

They're hoping someone can help them catch who is responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
