Extra Patrols In Highlands Ranch Parks After 2nd Explosive Device Found

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4)- Extra patrols are present in Highlands Ranch parks after a second explosive device was found just one day after the first one exploded, injuring a child.

The second device was discovered at Marcy Park located at 9377 Desert Willow Road in Highlands Ranch early Wednesday afternoon. That's about five miles away from where the first one was found on Tuesday in Dad Clark Park.

"That's the biggest concern. The fact that whoever does it has no record for who they might hurt," said neighbor Dan Lohman.

The device is described as a plastic bottle, an acid-type device, similar to the one found on Tuesday.

"But you can't live your life in fear and that gives the bullies that do stuff like this the upper hand and I don't believe in letting the opposition win," said Highlands Ranch resident Dennis Hofer.

The device found on Wednesday vented and did not explode. No one was hurt.

"My friends and I come here to play on the swings sometimes. When I heard about it, I don't want to come here, because i think something else is going to happen," said neighbor Victor Varella.

About 2 p.m. on Tuesday, five kids were playing by the basketball hoop at Dad Clark Park when one picked up device that looked like a water bottle. Except inside that bottle, was some kind of acid that exploded in the child's face. The child is expected to be okay.

The sheriff's office hasn't said the two cases are related but admits the similarities are striking. They said they are counting on the public's help to solve the case and are following up on all tips.

Patrols have been stepped up at all county parks in the area.
