Residents Say Second Found Explosive Device Is 'Really Getting Scary'

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4)- A second explosive device similar to the one found at a park in Highlands Ranch on Tuesday has been found at another park in Highlands Ranch.

The device was discovered at Marcy Park located at 9377 Desert Willow Road in Highlands Ranch early Wednesday afternoon. That's about five miles away from where the first one was found on Tuesday in Dad Clark Park.

The device is described as a plastic bottle, an acid-type device, similar to the one found on Tuesday.

Douglas County deputies had been stepping up patrols in parks to locate any suspicious devices. That's when they discovered the second device at Marcy Park about 12:30 p.m.

The device vented and did not explode. No one was hurt.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office patrol, bomb squad, detectives and crime lab all responded to the scene and are investigating.

About 2 p.m. on Tuesday, five kids were playing by the basketball hoop at Dad Clark Park when one picked up device that looked like a water bottle. Except inside that bottle, was some kind of acid that exploded in the child's face. The child is expected to be okay.

Residents near Marcy Park said the first device was scary, but finding a second device takes it to another level.

"The first one you just kind of think it's a fluky thing," Terri Crupke from Highlands Ranch said. "Now it's really getting scary."

"Well that the biggest concern -- the fact that whoever does it has no regard for who they might hurt," resident Dan Lohman said.

The sheriff's office hasn't said the two cases are related but admits the similarities are striking. They said they are counting on the public's help to solve the case and are following up on all tips.

Patrols have been stepped up at  all county parks.
