Postal Workers Gear Up For The Onslaught

DENVER (CBS4) – They call it the Super Bowl for the post office as United States Postal Service employees are working non-stop with Christmas fast approaching.

It all comes together this week with 470 million parcels delivered just during the month of December in time for the holidays.

"It's going to be huge. All of our post offices are going to be full, our trucks are full, our transportation is full; our carriers – this morning they were getting ready, they were cinching up their boots," David Rupert with USPS said.

Denver is a national postal distribution center for several states. About 400,000 letters and packages were processed Sunday night alone, which was a record.

"It's a record. We've never had a bigger, better year," Rupert said.

Just to keep up with the demand, some post offices will be open Sundays until Christmas, and mail carriers are working extra days as well.
