Denver Rescue Mission Begins Turkey Drive For Holidays

DENVER (CBS4)- The Denver Rescue Mission is asking the community for help to make sure that everyone has a holiday meal this year.

The mission is trying to reach their goal of collecting 15,000 turkeys for homeless and hungry people this Thanksgiving.

Donations of frozen turkeys, weighing 12 pounds or more are needed.

The birds will be distributed several different ways, some will be prepared and served at the Great Thanksgiving Banquet on Nov. 26, others will be placed in 1,000 Thanksgiving food boxes and distributed to families in need across the Denver metro area through churches, schools and non-profit organizations.

The Denver Rescue Mission will provide about 136,000 meals during the holiday season.

Additional items needed to Thanksgiving meals include canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned pumpkin, canned cranberries, canned yams, boxed stuffing and instant mashed potatoes.

Donations can be dropped off at the Lawrence Street Shelter located on the southeast corner of Park Avenue West and Lawrence Street, between 8 a.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

Cash contributions can be made online.
