Mayor Hancock's Son May Have Misled Police In Shooting Investigation

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Fort Collins say they might have been misled during a shooting investigation by the son of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

According to police, a group of teens, including Mayor Hancock's son, Jordan Hancock, went to Fort Collins from Denver to attend a party thrown at Washington's Bar and Grill. Court documents show Jordan Hancock may have misled police about a shooting last month that nearly killed another teen.

According to police, Jordan Hancock was one of five men inside an SUV on Eagle Drive when 19-year-old Jalen Robinson was shot in the head. Documents show Hancock and other men inside the car told police the gunshot came from outside, but other witnesses dispute that.

"I could still hear all these voices, like a stadium, a bunch of people," said a witness who didn't want her name used.

Before the shooting witnesses told police they heard gang chants coming from the group. Police say nearly 100 people had gathered in the street after leaving a party in Old Town Fort Collins.

"Then I heard 'pop pop' another two times and I thought, 'Was that gunshots?' " the woman said.

Court records point the blame toward 19-year-old Eddie Johnson, who was arrested in connection with the shooting. He's being charged with second-degree assault.

Police are still trying to determine what led to the shooting and how gang activity might have played a part. They are also investigating whether the mayor's son was in the SUV with any gang members.

Reports also indicate the teens involved may have been drinking that night. Police are trying to figure out who supplied the alcohol and whether more of the men inside the SUV will face criminal charges.

The mayor's office says Jordan Hancock is cooperating with investigators.
