FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) – A Fort Collins police officer was involved in a shooting Sunday afternoon that left a suspect dead.

According to Fort Collins police, an officer responding to a welfare check in the 1000 block of Davidson Drive at approximately 3:35 p.m. discovered an Asian man lying in a stairwell of an apartment complex. The man then shot the officer and the officer returned fire and hit the suspect.

"He attempted to contact the male that the people had called in on. The male drew a handgun and shot the police officer," Deputy Chief Cory Christensen said "The police officer returned fire."

The suspect was transported to a hospital where he died.

The officer was transported to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland with unknown injures but expected to make a full recovery. CBS4's Melissa Garcia confirmed the officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Shiloh, who lives with his mother and sister in the apartment next door, said he was taking out the trash and witnessed part of the shooting unfold.

"The suspect … he pushed the cop onto the ground, and that's when the cop started firing," Shiloh said.

Another family who didn't want to be identified was at home in the same building when the shots were fired. The said at least one of the bullets made its way inside their apartment.

Christensen said investigators with the help of the district attorney's office are now trying to piece together exactly what happened and why while one of their own is recovering.

"He's a great police officer, very well trained, sharp guy," Christensen said. "He's the kind of guy if you were calling for help you would want him to come help you out."

Police do not believe the suspect lived in the apartment complex but are looking into whether or not he knew someone who did.

The names of the officer and suspect haven't been released.
