While Cuffed And Shackled, 13-Year-Old Eludes Deputies For 90 Minutes

DENVER (CBS4) - A teen who was facing felony charges in two burglary cases escaped from sheriff's deputies on Friday while he was handcuffed and shackled.

The sheriff's department said the 13-year-old boy managed to elude deputies for an hour and a half as he was being transported from a court appearance to the Phillip B. Gilliam Youth Services Center east of downtown.

When the van carrying him opened, the teen took off and hid in the nearby neighborhood. He was apprehended in an alley between Gilpin and Franklin streets.

Once secured in the back of a patrol car, Denver police said he tried to open the car's doors and escape again. He's back in custody at the Gilliam facility.

The two deputies in the van have been removed from their duties transporting juveniles while an investigation occurs.
