Man, Dog Shot During A Neighborhood Argument In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A man and a dog were shot during a neighborhood argument in Lakewood Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting happened near 17th Avenue and Eaton Street on the west side of Sloan's Lake. There were no fatalities in the shootings.

"I heard a 'pop' and then I heard the most horrifying animal sound," said witness Joel Cruz.

Lakewood police aren't sure if a neighbor dispute led to the shooting of the Chihuahua named "Princess" or if neighbors in a nearby apartment complex were arguing which prompted the shooting.

"The gentleman that owns the dog has a tendency to fight with his neighbors. This is not the first time the cops have been here because of him," said neighbor Vicky Kinsey. "She's a good dog. He's just a bad owner."

Initial reports to police were that a dog and a person were both shot, but authorities said the shooter actually shot himself in the leg.

"We had initial information that a dog had been shot and a person may have been shot in the leg," said Lakewood Police spokesman Steve Davis. "Got our SWAT team out here because we didn't quite know what the situation was."

The shooter was taken into custody.

Lakewood SWAT teams were called to the incident because there were also initial reports that a shooter was on the run, but that wasn't the case.

No names or conditions have been released.
