Avid Cyclist Killed At Colorado Springs Velodrome

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A longtime cycling racer has died after being thrown from his bike during a race in Colorado Springs.

The Gazette reports that 51-year-old Victor Williams was participating in a training race Tuesday when he was thrown from his bike.

Police say Williams suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The United States Olympic Committee issued a statement calling the accident an "extraordinarily sad day."

The accident happened at the 7-Eleven Velodrome track at Memorial Park, which is the official training site for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic track cyclists and USA Roller Sports.

The newspaper reports that Williams was racing with about 22 other cyclists, including his teenage daughter, Kirsten.
