3 Injured In Crash Involving Street Racing In Aurora
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Aurora police are investigating after a case of illegal street racing sent three to the hospital.
The incident happened around midnight Sunday on Smith Road and Ensenada. The three people who were sent to the hospital were not part of the street racing.
Police believe there were multiple cars street racing westbound down Smith Road when a BMW struck a Honda that was making a turn. All three in the Honda were sent to the hospital.
One of them, 17-year-old Louis Andrew Guerrero-Sanchez from Commerce City, died from his injuries on Tuesday.
Police say the issue of street racing, especially down Smith Road, is not uncommon.
"They were on the wrong side of the street passing the Honda," Jeff Turner with Aurora said.
Aurora police recreated the scene.
"The BMW struck the driver's side of the Honda," Turner said.
Turner said two young males were taken to the hospital with the teenage male driver suffering with serious injuries.
"The driver is in very critical condition, we do not know if he is going to survive," Turner said.
Police believe four passengers in the BMW, which was stolen, fled.
"We are working on identifying them right now," Turner said.
Last Sunday night a Denver couple was hit by a stolen car in another street race off Interstate 25 and Yale.
"They told us we would not be alive if it had not been for the car we were in," crash victim Jean Duane said.
Turner says the routine races are illegal and dangerous, and something they're working to put an end to.
"If anyone sees a large gathering of cars late at night we would appreciate a call on that," he said.
The names of the victims haven't been released.
