Man Charged In 1996 Denver Slaying Dies Awaiting Trial
DENVER (AP) — A man awaiting trial in the 1996 murder of a Denver woman has died in custody from pneumonia and other health complications.
The Denver District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that 69-year-old Chester Leroy Todd died of natural causes. He died on Saturday at Denver Health Medical Center.
Todd was charged with first-degree murder for the death of 27-year-old Sherri Lynn Majors. Majors was last seen leaving a Commerce City bar in March, 1996, and her body was found the next morning in a Denver alley.
Todd, who was a truck driver at the time of the slaying, allegedly abandoned his truck in Iowa shortly after the slaying when he learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
Police learned his whereabouts and arrested him in Las Vegas in 2011.
