Classic Movie Version Of 'Wizard Of Oz' At Boulder's Dinner Theatre

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - For over 100 years L. Frank Baum's the "Wizard of Oz" has been delighting readers and audiences. Now the music of the classic movie version is on stage at Boulder's Dinner Theatre.

CBS4 Critic at Large Greg Moody was in the audience Wednesday night and reviewed the show for CBS4 News.

"It is -- more than likely -- one of the most popular pieces of family entertainment in history. And it is easy to see why -- it's got heart and humor, brains, courage and flying monkeys," Moody said.

Moody said there are wonderful touches in this production of the "Wizard of Oz -- the Kansas prairie in sepia lighting, and the key to the success of the entire show -- the first song -- the signature of the show -- this time sung beautifully by Sarah Grover as Dorothy.

"There are other wonderful effects through the show -- the tornado, the flying monkeys, the first appearance of Oz the Great and Powerful, the arrival of the witch, and the seemingly motorized munchkins," Moody said.

Moody said the cast is great as well, from Wayne Kennedy as the wizard and Barb Reeves as the witch -- to Scott Beyette, Bob Hoppe and Seth Caikowski as Dorothy's traveling companions.

"Great effects, humor, dance, music and a personal stamp on a well-known show that make it Boulder's own," Moody said.

The "Wizard of Oz" -- the classic musical -- is on stage through the summer at Boulder's Dinner Theatre. Call (303) 449-6000 for tickets and information or head to their website.
