Dog Owner Gives Himself Up But Not His Dog

MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) — The owner of a dog accused of attacking a woman has surrendered on an arrest warrant, but he hasn't turned over his dog, which is facing euthanasia under a court order.

The Montrose Daily Press reports Jeremiah Aguilar turned himself in Monday. An arrest warrant had been issued after he failed to appear at an earlier hearing.

Aguilar was convicted after his dog, named Dutch, bit a woman three times in November. Aguilar has appealed, saying Dutch was provoked.

A judge ordered Dutch to be euthanized but stayed the order while Aguilar appeals. Aguilar was supposed to turn Dutch over to animal control but hasn't.

Aguilar is scheduled to return to court June 6. His attorney told the Grand Junction Sentinel he plans to request a date change.
