Colorado Couple Behind 'Free Shipping Day'

WINDSOR, Colo. (CBS4) - Those who are holiday shopping online might want to wait for Dec. 17 as more than 1,000 companies will deliver orders for free that day and get it delivered in time for Christmas.

It's an idea and a business created and run by a husband and wife team in Colorado -- Luke and Maisie Knowles.

Shopping, buying, spending money and mailing are all part of what adds stress to the holidays. That's part of why Free Shipping Day each year has become a billion dollar industry.

"Free shipping was really a niche we wanted to get into," Maisie said.

She liked to online shop and they were both annoyed by the shipping fees.

"I just got so sick of paying shipping, so Luke came up with idea of a website just dedicated to free shipping codes," Maisie said.

So they created Free Shipping Day and got a long and impressive list of merchants to join.

But it isn't just a one-time day. FreeShipping.org offers coupon codes that can save consumers on shipping costs year round, as well as other perks.

"Typically you can get free shipping on any order," Maisie said. "Some merchants will even offer a coupon code on top of that. So coupon codes can range anywhere from 20 to 40 percent off your order as well."

"For the most part merchants have realized that free shipping is the number one promotion that shoppers respond to," Luke said. "So they've been very quick to start offering free shipping as much as they possibly can."

The free shipping movement is run from the Knowles' office in Windsor with a small staff that creates big savings for holiday shoppers.
