Part-Time Jobs Have Their Advantages

DENVER (CBS4) - Hiring appears to be slowing across the country. New unemployment claims rose again last week.

The number of new filings rose by 6,000 to 386,000, and many economists say they don't expect job growth in June to be much better than in May.

Sometimes a part-time job is all people can find, but that doesn't have to mean getting paid minimum wage. Whether or not working part time is one's choice, it does have its advantages. Part-time work allows for flexibility which allows workers time to determine whether that job is the right fit.

Another advantage of part-time jobs is some of them pay good money and offer pretty good benefits. According to AOL Jobs the pay ranges from $25 up to $40 an hour. There's everything from part-time school bus drivers, to tutors, make-up artists, Pilates or yoga instructors, English teachers and flight attendants.

Denver Public Schools is is hosting two job fairs which will include interviews for potential bus drivers and transportation paraprofessionals.

The first fair will be held on Tuesday, June 26 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Hilltop facility off of West 7th Avenue. The second job fair will be held on Thursday, June 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the northeast bus terminal on Dallas Street.

Those wanting a bus driver job must be at least 21 and have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a clean driving record with current Colorado driver's license. Those applying to be a bus paraprofessional must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

AAA offers part timers medical and dental insurance and part timers can also invest a portion of their pretax check to a 401(k) plan.

The Container Store is another one offering part timers benefits like medical, dental, pet insurance, as well as paid vacation and a 40 percent discount on merchandise.

At Lowes, from the first day of hire, part timers are eligible for limited health plans, term life insurance, vision and dental care and short-term disability.

Macy's part timers are eligible for medical, dental and disability income protection. They can also participate in healthy living events.

Two other companies which offer pretty good benefits for part time workers are Starbucks and Target.
