Man In Custody After Standoff With Aurora Police

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A 33-year-old man is in custody after a standoff with police that began Monday afternoon in Aurora.

Frank Fania with Aurora police said the incident began shortly before 2 p.m. and ended peacefully about six hours later.

"Police responded to the 1100 block of Dayton Street on a report of shots fired. Officers first on scene contacted witnesses and a possible victim and found out the incident actually happened about 30 minutes prior to initial reports," Fania said in a statement. "At that time officers were told the suspect was last seen going back into his house."

Officers set up a perimeter around the suspect's house and called the SWAT team.

"Once SWAT arrived numerous attempts were made to make contact with the occupants of the house, still not knowing if an armed party was inside or not," Fania said.

The suspect, identified as Mario Thomas Lopez, 33, was later found hiding in the attic of the house.

After 8 p.m. Lopez reportedly came out of the attic and was taken into custody. He is being held for investigation of first-degree assault and felony menacing.
