Key Testimony In Trial Of Vet Accused Of Murdering Girlfriend

DENVER (CBS4) - There was key testimony Tuesday in the Denver trial of an Iraq War veteran charged with murdering his girlfriend.

Robert Walters, 25, is accused of killing Brittney Brashers last fall when she was 22 years old. Walters' lawyers say Brashers died in a car accident. Prosecutors say he staged the accident to cover up the murder.

About a week into the trial, Robert Walters' wife, Elena Walters took the stand. She painted the picture of a complicated love triangle that involved her husband and Brashers.

Robert Walters was having an affair with Brashers and living with her in Colorado Springs where she was stationed in the military. Elena Walters knew about the affair, and yet stayed married to him, even living with his parents in California while he was with Brashers.

Elena Walters recorded conversations that she had with her husband when he was in jail after being arrested for a fight with Brashers where he says she kicked, bit and punched him. He said that he was going to destroy her and that they needed to "f---" her up.

Elena Walters also testified that Brashers gave her husband herpes, which she then got. She said her husband once told her that if anyone gave him a disease he would kill them.

The jury then to heard taped conversations where Robert Walters told his wife that he killed Brashers and faked a car accident to cover it up. Robert Walters' defense team said in opening arguments that he made up the story to get rid of his wife because he didn't love her anymore.

Robert Walters was later charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder for allegedly paying an inmate he met in jail after he was arrested for murder to kill his wife.
