Asst. Principal's Wife Finds Out About Relationship With Student By Finding Posts On Facebook

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) - An assistant principal from Arvada High School is under arrest and suspected of sex assault on a student.

Anthony Alvarez, 40, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

An arrest affidavit from the Arvada Police Dept. states that Alvarez's wife, Stephanie Alvarez, called the Arvada High School principal on Aug. 25 to report that her husband admitted he had an affair with a student.

All the details leading up to Alvarez's arrest are documented in the arrest affidavit. Read the entire arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Arvada Police Commander Gary Hutchcraft said he was in the lobby of the police department when he overheard Alvarez state his name and that he was here "to turn himself in for having an affair with a student."

In the affidavit, Alvarez also told police that he had known the girl since she was in seventh grade at Everett Middle School when he was a teacher.

Alvarez also told police that "...he was not a predator and he never before had any sexual relationship or sexual contact with anyone under the age of 18." Alvarez also admitted that "He has had affairs before, but they were over the age of 18" and that the girl "...was the one who came on to him."

The school district has placed Alvarez on paid administrative leave.

Alvarez has had his position at the school since 2008 and has been working for the district since 2000. His previous position with the district was in Wheat Ridge at Everitt Middle School.

As part of his pre-trial supervision, Alvarez is ordered to have no internet or computer use, no contact with the victim, no contact with anyone under the age of 18. That order includes his four children.

Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 1.
