Union Pacific To Help Remove Pueblo Rail Bridge
PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - Union Pacific has agreed to dismantle part of an old railroad bridge over Fountain Creek in Pueblo.
The Pueblo Chieftain newspaper reports that the railroad will take out six spans by May. The iron and lumber form a deck across the creek. The city of Pueblo would be responsible for the iron truss bridge on the west side.
Pueblo stormwater consultant Dennis Maroney told the Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway District board that piers would remain in the water. He said the piers don't seriously impede flows.
Pueblo wants the out-of-use bridge removed because of fears the bridge could act as a dam in a major flood if debris piled up.
The bridge is just upstream of the confluence with the Arkansas River.
