Pitkin County Projecting Bigger Budget Surplus

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Pitkin County's finance department is projecting a bigger budget surplus for the county than expected this year.

The Aspen Daily News reports the county forecast a surplus of about $746,000 for 2011. But with sales tax revenues and treasurer's fees through May coming in higher than expected, the government has raised that projection to about $990,000.

That should help because there have been shortfalls in projected income from building and planning fees as the construction industry continues to struggle. Payments to the community development department for planning, environmental health and building inspections also have been lower than expected.

Surplus money will be added to the county's savings of more than $4.5 million, in its undesignated fund.
