High Water Has Westminster Firefighters Preparing For The Worst

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- High water and the threat of more rushing water from near record snowpack levels in the mountains have firefighters from Westminster getting ready. Crews trained at Ketner Reservoir on Friday.

They're just one of many fire departments across Colorado brushing up on their water rescue skills with more people expected to be at recreational waterways during Memorial Day weekend.

Firefighters are worried about high water, but also worried about small lakes and ponds along the Front Range.

"Colorado actually does have a lot of small lakes, small ponds. People are using those and there are no rangers, there's no one out here," said one Westminster firefighter.

Firefighters caution those out on the water to take the proper safety precautions: wear a life vest when in a kayak, canoe or boat, follow guidelines for that sport and know your limits.
