Life In Prison For Ex-Soldier Convicted Of Murder

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A former Fort Carson soldier who served in Iraq has been sentenced to life in prison plus 84 years for the rape and murder of one teenager and the sexual assault of another.

Robert Hull Marko, 23, was sentenced Monday in Colorado Springs.

He was convicted Feb. 3 of first-degree murder, plus two counts each of sex assault and attempted sex assault of 19-year-old Judilianna Lawrence, whom he got to know over the Internet. She died in 2008.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl five days before Lawrence's murder.

The Gazette reports that during the sentencing hearing, Marko's father, Wes Marko, questioned whether lives could have been saved had more been done to help soldiers returning home with mental health problems.
