Family Upset About Hit & Run Plea Deal

DENVER (CBS4/AP) - A 21-year-old man has pleaded guilty to running into two pedestrians in lower downtown Denver and taking off.

The district attorney's office says Brandon Mondragon pleaded guilty Monday to hitting the two in October. Tim Albo, 26, and Heather Kornman, 27, were in the crosswalk when they were struck by the car.

The DA says Mondragon faces six months in jail with work release, four years of probation and 300 hours of community service when he's sentenced April 25.

The two were seriously injured. Albo's family has called the plea deal a "major injustice."

"It's infuriating. It's no justice, as far as I'm concerned," Albo's sister Jennifer Albo said. "The way the plea was presented to us was this is the best we could get and I don't know how because it's really, really frustrating."

"It doesn't do justice for my brother or other victims of hit-and-runs," Albo's sister Melanie Salazar said. "I don' think this is something we agreed on that we felt we were happy with. But we felt it was the best we were going to get."

Albo is making a remarkable recovery, but requires round-the-clock care. The family is hoping to move on.

The Albo family is coordinating with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and reaching out to the victims of other hit-and-runs in hopes of changing Colorado law regarding hit-and-runs.
