The State of Colorado will start phasing in mandatory lab testing of marijuana edible products on May 1. Currently, marijuana product testing of any kind has been performed strictly on a voluntary basis.
It has been seven weeks since Colorado made history by becoming the first state in the country to legalize recreational marijuana, but the demand is greater than expected and the supply can come with surprises of its own.
Marijuana testing used to mean checking to see if someone had been smoking it. But with Oregon, Washington and Colorado all making pot more widely available to the public, laboratory testing for safety, purity, potency and active ingredients is adding to the legitimacy of the drug.
Marijuana may be coming out of the black market in Colorado and Washington state, but the drug, at least for now, will retain a decidedly underground feel: Users may not know what’s in it.
